Nest is a thermostat from the guys who brought us the first iPod and iPhone, so it’s so easy a 10-year-old can use it.

It’s running a bit of software and connects to the Internet using your home’s WiFi web connection. This combination is what makes it a success.

The unit automatically learns your preferred temperatures, creating its own schedule on-the-fly. A built-in motion sensor also works to adjust for the times you’re away from your home, putting your home’s heating/air conditioning system in customizable power-saving mode.

You can also adjust the Nest’s settings remotely using the app on your iPhone or iPad – and by using their website. Coming home from the cottage, flick the air conditioning on from the car (passenger seat of course).

After everything’s said and done, this should save you some money on your home energy bills. And program itself automatically – something most people fail to do in the first place.
